Zillow is one of the authentic handicrafts, that despite its simplicity, has a special weaving technology. This art-industry has been prevalent in Iran especially in its desert regions for centuries. Zillow’s cotton nature and its simple and unpretentious appearance make Zillow an ideal carpet for desert areas, mosques and places of worship.
The motifs used in Zillow are obtained from creative minds of weavers, which are created by combining geometric shapes. The most important designs of Zillow are the pattern like Baftok, Gach Kineh, Valang, Gereh (knot), Band-e Romi (Roman band), Zanjiruk (chain), Porte Toure and Hasht par (eight feathers).

Zillow is a simple, unassuming, durable, cool and hygienic underlay made of cotton yarn and is one of the most beautiful Iranian handicrafts. Despite its brilliant background, unfortunately has lost its original position and today there aren’t many masters in this art. The history of Zillow is estimated to be between 500 and 700 years and its origin is certainly the desert regions of Iran especially Meybod city in Yazd province.

Zillow is very similar to whicker in texture and model, and like whicker, can be used in mosques, Mosalla and holy places. Experts speculate that Zillow is an evolution of the whicker weaving method or that its weavers used the whicker weaving method. However, Zillow is one of the oldest hand-woven products, known for its antiquity before the rise of Islam. But there are different opinions about where this type of texture originated. Zillow weaving was common for centuries before Islam, as the available evidence shows that in the early Islamic centuries, Zillow was a well-known carpet and its texture was common in most of the vast areas of Iran; Especially since Zillow was widely used in religious places and on the other hand it can be said that its name was associated with religious buildings. Despite the widespread use of this handicraft in the past centuries and decades, unfortunately, the prevalence of artificial inlays in recent decades has put Zillow and the art of Zillow weaving on the verge of extinction, limiting its life to the historic city of Meybod and a few of masters. Fortunately, this art-industry and Meybod as a Zillow center in Iran revived due to activities which are done in the beginning of 21th century, and in 2018 Meybod introduced as a global city of Zillow. The industry has experienced a breathtaking recession in recent decades and has gone through a difficult period in competition with modern undelays, with less than 10 masters and a life limited to Meybod. With the resurgence of this original art, now the city of Meybod, located in Yazd province, is the most important producer of this underlay. This beautiful texture is specific to desert areas. This carpet is in accordance with the way of life of the people of the region and part of the religious beliefs, history, architecture, nature and dialect of the people of these areas are also embossed on its fabric. The oldest and at the same time the most exquisite ornaments of Meybod Zillows dates back to the early 18th century, which designed by twenty-four holy rugs on it. In general, its colors are the same and eye-catching with a slight difference. In the margin of that, the name of Waqif and the date (1706) has been engraved.

The raw material of Zillow is cotton and yarn, which in previous years was grown and spun by manual spinning machines in the area. The yarn was called “formal yarn” and the Zillow that was woven with it was less delicate but had more strength. After the establishment of several weaving factories in Yazd city, the use of manufactured yarns became popular. In the local dialect, warp and weft are called tone and pokar. Tone does not need to be dyed, but must be polished for extra strength. Zillow weaving requires at least 2 people, one is a teacher and the other is a student or a Panje Zan. The master’s job is to controlling the pattern and weaving the weft. With the advent of new technology on the world stage, Zillow has lost its prosperity; While this underlay is made entirely of pure yarn, people with skin allergies can use it to stay away from woolen rugs that cause respiratory diseases without endangering their health.

Zillow is introduced as a health carpet. This traditional hand-woven is the only hand-woven that is made entirely from plants. The most important feature of Zillow is that it is organic. Soft cotton plant is one of the raw materials of Zillow, which includes all the properties of cotton in this hand-woven fabric, and along with other plants such as common madder, woad and reseda, takes on various colors and exposes Zillow. Zillow does not produce static electricity and it can be boldly stated that the static electricity in Zillow is zero. As we know, an electric charge is stored in the body as static electricity and damages the body. Static electricity is mostly produced in plastic fibers, but Zillow does not produce static electricity due to its natural and cotton nature, so it is not harmful to the body and highly recommended by doctors. It does not cause airborne particles due to the lack of lint, so it does not harm the body’s respiratory system, and doctors recommend its use for children and respiratory patients. Zillow does not cause skin allergies or any skin effects in the human body due to the cellulosic substances in it and its organic nature.

Weaving Zillow can be a tough sport. The weaver is constantly going back and forth across the Zillow while weaving, and he constantly plays with the Kaly and Kamooneh, which is considered a hard exercise, hence the weavers have a healthy body. Another benefit of Zillow is that it goes back to nature and after being old and unusable, they are dug in a pit next to the plants to be used as fertilizer for other plants.
